First page pencils are done. Now I’m inking it. I would have been finished by now, but I ran into a problem: foliage. Such as grass, bushes, trees, etc. The problem with foliage is that there’s a happy middle with them that you have to find. Do too much, and it just looks like a bunch of scribbles. Do too little, and all you have is an amorphous blob. So most of my day yesterday was spent studying inking techniques. Since I’m doing this digitally, this makes it even more difficult because I have to find a way to simulate these techniques on my tablet. I studied one of my favorite artists and inkers, Goseki Kojima, who is the artist of the manga Lone Wolf and Cub. His style of drawing is amazing and if you aren’t familiar with the series, check it out. Anyways, a lot of his grasses and bushes are created using a combination of screen work and dry brush, both of which I can’t do on a tablet. However, when I was in college, I had a wild hair up my ass once and bought a bunch of custom Photoshop brushes. So maybe I will have something I can use in the hundreds of brushes I have. If not, maybe something close that I can tweak to use. But I almost have the outlines done, after which I’m going to have to do some experimenting in Photoshop before continuing on. Slowly getting there.
